E-SCOOTERS IN TASMANIA
In Tasmania, an e-scooter (also known as a PMD – Personal Mobility Device), is a small, electrically powered device that is designed to transport one person over short to medium distances.
It is acknowledged that e-scooters provide individuals with a low cost, active transport option.
Under Tasmanian road rules e-scooters may be used on most footpaths, shared paths, bike lanes and roads with a speed limit under 50km/h.
Rules that are in place for PMD users that consider the safety of pedestrians include:
-
prohibiting PMDs from using footpaths in areas where there are lots of pedestrians by using signage
-
requiring PMD users to travel a safe distance from pedestrians so they can stop and avoid a collision
-
requiring PMD users to ride with consideration for other road users
-
lower maximum speed limit of 15km/h on footpaths.
Further information on PMDs can be found on the Department of State Growth, Transport Services website here.
When using an e-scooter please remember that you share the footpath(s) with other users and must give way to pedestrians and people using mobility aids.
Illegal or unsafe use can be reported to Tasmania Police (000 for emergencies or 131 444 for non-emergencies).
If you have an issue or concern regarding e-scooters in Tasmania that you would like to further discuss or get information, please contact your local Council or the Department of Transport via mail: Transport Services, Department of State Growth, GPO BOX 536, Hobart Tasmania 7001 or email: info@stategrowth.tas.gov.au
